Chronology
1989
Raisa Gorbachev establishes Children’s Leukaemia Haematology project. She began raising money to finance treatment for children suffering from blood cancers and to provide medical help to children and teenagers suffering from leukaemia.
1990
Raisa created and patronized The International Association of Hematologists of the World for Children, which helped introduce modern techniques of treating childhood leukemia in Russia, and acted as a patron to The Moscow Central Children's Hospital.
1991
Half of funds from Gorbachev Nobel Prize money and money raised from Raisa’s book entitled “I Hope” directed to children’s Leukaemia Haematology project.
1999
September 20th Raisa Gorbachev dies from Leukaemia
2002
Alexander Lebedev pledges $2.5 million to build Raisa Gorbachev Institute in St Petersburg, Russia
2006
Raisa Gorbachev Foundation established in the UK to raise funds for children with cancer. 1st event held in June - £523,262 raised, to be spent equipping the St Petersburg Clinic.
2007
Fundraising Gala held at Hampton Court. £1,068,000 raised. Money spent on equipment and drugs. 20th September - The Raisa Gorbachev Children’s Institute for Haematology and Transplantology opened. First annual meeting of leading specialists takes place to mark the anniversary of Raisa’s death.
2008
Gala raises a staggering £2,248,073
2009
Gala raises £1,500,000 to fund better diagnosis, treatment and control of cancers in children
