Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research
A transplant with cord blood stem cells can cure a child of leukaemia. But there are still high risks. This project – funded by the Foundation - could lead directly to better results.
It aims to speed up children’s recovery after a transplant, reduce the risk of infection, increase the chance of complete cure after cord blood transplants and increase the use of cord blood transplants to treat children with high risk leukaemia. The project is being run by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. We invest in groundbreaking research to find better treatments and cures for the 30,000 children, teenagers and adults who are diagnosed with a blood cancer in the UK every year.
When the charity started in 1960, childhood leukaemia was a virtual death sentence. Now thanks to their research nine out of 10 children survive the most common form of this disease. But the outlook for some children is not so good and treatments remain harsh. We want to find gentler, safer treatments and give all children the chance to live happy, healthy lives.
